HIRE Education

The HIRE Education Program is a customized career development plan that helps you develop job-search skills during your Bentley years - and at every stage of your career. HIRE Education encompasses the hundreds of programs Career Services (UCS) offers to help students develop the skills and contacts that pave the way for professional success.

How does it work?

HIRE Education has four key stages: EXPLORE, EXPERIMENT, EXPERIENCE, and EXCEL. Each one ties directly to a year in school. You can also engage at different times, or revisit certain parts of the program when you wish. The goal is for you to acquire lifelong professional development skills.

All stages of HIRE Education develop the core aspects of your job search strategy: creating a resume, conducting informational interviews, networking, developing an “elevator pitch,” practicing interviews, and more. Each stage also includes specific focus on particular areas:

Freshman Year: Explore

During the EXPLORE phase, you will develop an understanding of your skills, interests and abilities. Your freshman year is about exploring your interests, discovering the paths that best fit your personality, and beginning to think about your future. You'll work with a dedicated first-year career adviser, who will help you answer these questions. You can attend workshops on choosing a major, use career assessment tools, or schedule individual advising appointments to map out your customized career action plan. Your adviser will help you progress through the plan.

At this stage you can also participate in career development/job shadow days at companies to gain insight about the organization, industry, and functional role - or even just observe a professional business environment.

Sophomore Year: Experiment

In the EXPERIMENT stage, you will gain a deeper understanding of career paths and organizations. You'll gather specific information about companies and functional roles through research, networking, and informational interviews. You will learn to build a more focused resume by participating in clubs and organizations. We also strongly encourage you to seek an internship in this stage.

Since you aren’t required to officially declare your major until the end of sophomore year, this is your opportunity to experiment with many different paths. Career Services will support you through this entire process. After you decide upon a major, you will “graduate” to working with a dedicated career adviser by major, who will support more focused career exploration.

Junior Year: Experience

As you enter the EXPERIENCE stage, you apply the knowledge gained from the first two stages to the workplace. This is the time to revise or confirm your career goals, update your resume with relevant information and skills, and network with confidence. You can seek an internship or job with on-campus interviews and Bentley career fairs, where  hundreds of top companies recruit and hire Bentley students. You will use the BentleyLink system to explore job postings and easily apply online.

Senior Year: Excel

When you are prepared to position yourself for lifetime career success, you are ready to EXCEL in your job search and relationship building. You'll finalize your resume, highlighting expertise for the job you seek, employ your network to share your goals, and extend your network with social media and professional associations. At this stage, you should understand the value you bring to your desired job and target specific employers. You‘ll prepare to transition to Bentley alumnus/a, equipped with lifelong skills for career advancement.

This is the year when all of your hard work during your college career pays off. Get ready to launch!

Bentley’s Career Services, as well as the Center for Alumni, Parents and Friends, will remain valuable resources for you even after you leave Bentley.
